Through the eyes of Merry (メリーの目)
Playback Part 8 - "Blazing Rhythm"
written by Nero / translation by eurydike
This is the second time I write something for “Through the eyes of Merry”, right? Time passes by so quickly. I think, this time I want to tell you about what happened after our first live.
Two days after our first appearance in Meguro Rock May Kan, we went on to Nagoya to start our first tour. That seemed pretty impressive, even to us. At said Secret Live [Note: most gigs of their very first tour were secret] we played “Violet Harenchi”, “Binibon nichoume yachiyokan” and other tracks we had already written. After this event we were known as the band that comes from Tokyo and Nagoya and matches perfectly as a group. Even if all five of us seemed lighthearted during our first tour, there were times we got attacked by a certain nervous tension. We had come from Tokyo, we were a new Eroguro band – people expected a lot. But we played our lives recklessly and that was what attracted quite a big audience. This time, indeed, we had made a raging impact – now people only had to remember our band name…
To achieve this, we only had to spread our sound, meaning we had our MD distributed without restriction at an Indies shop (in Tokyo). But rather than an audible impact, we made a visual one: Gara spit ink out of his mouth, scattering it everywhere. To the music muddied by a maniac, we all had an evident, essential impact on stage. It was by no means an outstanding live. Some of the questionnaires we got back at that time said: “It was eerie”, “It made us feel bad” and so on. But I remember that amongst the people in the crowd there were also some who wrote: “Sooner or later people will definitely notice you! Such a great band can’t let anybody unaffected!” and such. That gave us self-confidence.
Then again, we had a live in Tokyo. Those who have been acquainted with us (for a longer time) will know, but that sold-out event had been organised by our old friends “baroque” and it was held at Shinjuku Loft. When I remember right, that was where we played “Rojiura Aika” for the very first time. And that was also the first moment during a Merry concert where people were really eager to listen.
Several days later, we played at ON AIR EAST in Shibuya in front of 1’000 people. It had only been our third concert in Tokyo, but again it was sold out. On that day, some editors of this cool and crazy rock magazine “Fool’s Mate” were around, and even if we only played three songs, the attention people gave us had increased. On that day, the five of us had shown a raging fighting spirit, we had managed to make a visual and audible impact during our live, those two kinds of impact coexisted in our show, which meant that it’s possible to play the perfect concert.
Afterwards, during our lives in the Kantou region and in Nagoya, we rushed into the studio to record our first maxi single, “Haikarasan ga tooru”...
